American NOBEL PRIZE winning novelist SAUL BELLOW has died at the age of 89.

The writer - the son of Russian immigrants - had his wife and daughter by his side when he died of natural causes at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts yesterday (5APR05).

Bellow, whose works include SEIZE THE DAY, HENDERSON THE RAIN KING, HERZOG, MR SAMMLER'S PLANET and HUMBOLDT'S GIFT, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1976.

Bellow was married five times, and fathered a daughter at the age of 84.
