Ny Theater Owners Fight Ban On Supersized Drinks
New York theater owners are vowing to fight a recently enacted law that would bar the sale of supersized sugary drinks in many public places. A spokesman for The National Association of Theatre Owners in New York said on Friday that the ban could reduce revenue by as much as 25 percent and implied that the loss would have to be made up by higher ticket prices unless the ban is overturned. The ban was initiated by Bloomberg">Mayor Michael Bloomberg who called it the biggest step a city has taken to curb obesity. But Dr. Jeffrey Mechanick, a professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York told the Associated Press, Obesity is not just a disease simply of people drinking too much sugary soft drinks ... Just attacking one thing, individually, isn't going to do much. However, he acknowledged that the ban could promote an awareness of the issue of obesity and thereby influence behavior.
