O'brien Continues His Laugh Assault On Nbc Execs

Conan O'Brien continued to milk his own predicament at NBC for laughs Tuesday night, saying during his monologue, "I spent the afternoon at Universal Studios' amusement park, enjoying their brand-new ride, The Tunnel of Litigation." Referring to reports that he is fighting with NBC over intellectual property rights to some of the characters that he created like Triumph the Insult Dog and the Masturbating Bear, O'Brien remarked, "Isn't it great to live in a country where a cigar-smoking dog puppet and a bear that masturbates are considered 'intellectual property?'" Meanwhile, NBC announced Tuesday that O'Brien's guests this week will be Adam Sandler tonight (Wednesday), Robin Williams and Barry Manilow on Thursday, and Tom Hanks and Will Ferrell on Friday. Ferrell was O'Brien's first guest when he took over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno last June. On his own show Tuesday night, David Letterman, referring to what he called Jay Leno's "State of the Network" speech on Monday, commented, "[Jay] said that we should not blame Conan for what's going on. ... And I said to myself, no one is blaming Conan!" He faulted Leno for agreeing to do the 10 00 p.m. show. When you hear you're going to be replaced, he said, "you call ABC, you call Fox, you try to get my job, you leave. You don't [mimicking Leno] 'Yeah, okay, but I'll be in the lobby, you know, if you need me.' You don't hang around. You go across the street and you punish NBC and you make them eat your words."
