Off The Shelves And Off The Top Ten

Take Me Home Tonight, which had reportedly sat on the studio's shelves for four years before it was finally allowed to escape, received mostly dismal notices from critics -- but a few positive ones as well. Ty Burr in the Boston Globe asked why the film had gone unreleased for so long. "It's not that bad," he wrote. "Completely unoriginal, sure, but watchable and even likable." But Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times commented that the characters "speak entirely in plot points and punchlines and seem to be motivated only by lust, greed and ego. Well," he added, "we all are, but few bring to this motivation so little intelligence and wit." The film failed to finish in the top ten over the weekend, earning just $3.5 million.
