One Direction - One Direction Defeat American Namesakes In Court Battle
One Direction have won the lawsuit to keep using their name. The UK boy band, who rose to fame after appearing on the TV talent show X Factor, have been locked in a battle with a Californian rock band of the same name. The American One Direction didn't take kindly to these fresh faced young upstarts from over the pond stealing the use of 'One Direction' but according to the Press Association, the situation has now been settled amicably.
A joint statement for both bands revealed "All of the parties involved are pleased with the resolution and wish each other success." The US rock band, who have been together since 2009, had previously tried to reach a settlement with the band but eventually filed a lawsuit when they were unable to "negotiate a reasonable compromise." The band were claiming over 600k in damages as well as a share of the British band's profits, as well as hoping to get them to stop using the name. They had also contacted representatives for the British group a year earlier, to inform them of their trademark registration on the name.
It's unclear exactly how much the eventual settlement was for but with the weight of Simon Cowell behind them (not to mention their recent success in the US and forthcoming appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards), it's hardly surprising that the British lads were able to continue using the name to which they had grown accustomed.
