South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder after his girlfriend was shot dead, amid police reports of previous domestic "incidents" at his home.
The 26-year-old sprinter was arrested in the early hours of Thursday (14Feb13) after his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was shot four times at his residence in Pretoria, South Africa.
He was taken to a local police station and charged with murder, and is due to appear at Pretoria Magistrates Court on Thursday. Pistorius has applied for bail but cops will oppose the request during the hearing.
Initial reports suggested the 30-year-old model let herself into the property as part of a Valentine's Day surprise and Pistorius took aim after mistaking her for an intruder, but South African Police spokeswoman Denise Beukes insists the story did not come from an official source.
Briefing reporters outside Pistorius' home, Beukes said the force was "very surprised" by speculation suggesting Pistorius mistook Steenkamp for a burglar, insisting, "These allegations did not come from us."
She also revealed officers have previously been called to the track star's address, adding, "I can confirm there have previously been incidents at the home of Oscar Pistorius - allegations of a domestic nature."
Following the tragedy, Steenkamp's publicist Sarit Tomlinson spoke out to pay tribute to her client, telling Sky News, "She was the kindest, most unbelievable girl. They've been together for a couple of months and it's been a fabulous relationship, a healthy, fabulous relationship... She was a rising star. There was so much in the pipeline for her. She was just about to explode into the media. Very talented, very bright young girl. It's a huge loss for everyone. It's too shocking for words."
