Paramount has greenlit 'G.I. Joe 3'.

The movie studio has ordered a follow-up to the action blockbuster starring DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON and Adrianne Palicki following the global success of 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' upon its release last week, according to Variety.

The second movie in the franchise topped the US box office over the weekend taking in $41.2 million, and it also earned a worldwide total of $132 million in just five days.

The action flick's release was delayed by a year in order to convert the movie to 3D, and it's rumoured that producers wanted to film more scenes with Channing Tatum - who briefly reprised his role as Captain Duke Hauser from 2009's 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' - following his success in movies such as '21 Jump Street' and 'Magic Mike'.

Predecessor 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' was critically panned and failed to meet box office expectations, resulting in Paramount partially rebooting the franchise for the sequel.

Director Jon M. Chu recently revealed he would love to film a third movie and would ''take it to the next level''.

He told BANG Showbiz: ''You know, it would be an honour [to do it], if fans went out to see it [this time]. And man I'd love to [make another one]. We have a lot of foundation with the characters here, so it would be really fun to take to the next level.''
