Punk legend Patti Smith scrapped her controversial show at New York's famous Chelsea Hotel after a backlash from residents facing eviction from the landmark.
The star was set to perform a gig at the hotel on Thursday night (12Jan12), but faced a boycott from angry tenants who have received eviction notices from the venue's new owner, Joseph Chetrit.
Chetrit is embroiled in a dispute with 30 residents who have been told to vacate the premises, and he's allegedly angered many others with his plans to renovate.
Smith performed a private gig for Chetrit's friends and family on Wednesday (11Jan12) but decided to cancel her show at the hotel the following night after residents threatened to disrupt the set and accused her of being a "sell out" for siding with the landlord, according to the New York Daily News.
