British socialite Peaches Geldof struggled to deal with her childhood grief after her mother Paula Yates died in 2000 because her father Bob Geldof encouraged his children to "carry on" as normal following the tragedy.

The star was just 11 years old when Tv presenter Yates died of an accidental heroin overdose, and Peaches admits she "blocked out" the pain of her mum's shock death in the aftermath of her passing.

The 23 year old reveals her father, who split from Yates in the mid-1990s, told his children to attend school as normal following the tragedy - but, as a result, Peaches didn't come to terms with her loss until she was a teenager.

She tells Britain's Elle magazine, "I remember the day my mother died, and it's still hard to talk about it. I just blocked it out. I went to school the next day because my father's mentality was 'Keep calm and carry on'.

"So we all went to school and tried to act as if nothing had happened. But it had happened. I didn't grieve. I didn't cry at her funeral. I couldn't express anything because I was just numb to it all. I didn't start grieving for my mother properly until I was maybe 16."

However, Peaches admits her mother's hard-partying ways helped her keep her own behaviour in check as she was growing up: "I did experiment with drugs, I did get drunk and go to parties, but I was never that wild. I could have been, I could have let myself spiral but all the time I remembered what happened to my mum."
