Philip Seymour Hoffman is joining the cast of 'Child 44'.

The 45-year-old actor is negotiating a deal to star alongside Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, and Joel Kinnaman in the upcoming political thriller, Deadline.com reports.

The 1950s-set drama follows a disgraced Soviet police officer who tries to solve a string of gruesome child murders, and has been adapted from Tom Rob Smith's 2008 Man Booker Prize longlisted novel of the same name.

Daniel Espinosa is directing from a screenplay by 'The Wire' writer Richard Price, while 'Prometheus' helmer Ridley Scott has signed on to produce.

British star Hardy will play the officer, who has been wrongly framed for treason by a colleague, and Rapace will portray his seemingly-doting wife.

Hoffman was nominated for an Oscar for his powerful performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2012 drama 'The Master', and can next be seen in 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' sequel.

This will be the actor's first role since he admitted to falling off the wagon after 23 years of clean living. He checked himself into a rehab facility for 10 days in May after his prescription pill habit escalated into taking heroin.

Hoffman is expected to play a minor role as filming has already begun, kicking off on June 10 in Prague.
