Piers Morgan, the British journalist turned television personality, debuted his new CNN show last night (17th January 2011) and almost brought talk show legend Oprah Winfrey to tears. The ex-Britain's Got Talent judge interviewed the queen of daytime television who warned him not to reduce her to tears, however, she became weepy when talking about the civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King.
After Morgan had mentioned the heroic clergyman and activist who was assassinated in 1968, Oprah said, "Now you are going to make me weep. I could weep over that", before adding, "I would because I hold him in reverence. And I know that I would not be here... this life... the dream that I live in, would not be possible if he hadn't had been who he was". The pair covered a number of topics during Morgan's debut show, including teenage pregnancy and suicide bids. Winfrey spoke about how she fell pregnant at the age of 14, adding, "I had no connection to that baby. I felt nothing but relief because I felt before that baby was born I was going to have to kill myself".
The 45-year-old's first show since replacing Larry King was warmly received by critics. Entertainment Weekly's television critic KEN TUCKER called Piers "clever, tenacious, vain, a flatterer, and fitfully funny".
