Pirates Of The Caribbean director Gore Verbinski will not direct the fourth instalment of the high seas adventure franchise.

It was announced last May that Verbinski was attached to adapt hit videogame Bioshock for the screen and he has now chosen to bring the Xbox game to live rather than returning to the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow and company.

After directing the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Verbinski has informed Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he wull not be returning for a fourth instalment. Filming was penned to start in 2010.

The sequel, to star a returning Johnny Depp as Captain Jack, has not yet been given the green light, so Verbinski's refusal might delay or even put to rest another entry in the series.

Instead, Verbinski has chosen to target his attention on the Universal Picture's adaptation of the 2k developed video game BioShock, with John Logan (Sweeney Todd, The Aviator, The Last Samurai, Gladiator) listed as script writer.

"I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team," Verbinski told Variety. "I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

Verbinski is still working with Depp on a CG-animated film for Paramount Pictures called Rango (also penned by Logan) which is set to release in March 2011.
