A paramedic allegedly tried to extort $25 million from John Travolta over documents that were irrelevant to the actor's son's death, officials say.

Jett Travolta, 16, was found unconscious at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island by a house caretaker and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead earlier this month.

Paramedic Tarino Lightbourne was detained - along with two others - on January 23rd over an alleged plot to sell a 'refusal to transport' medical document signed by Travolta when Lightbourne was treating Jett, Bahamian police say.

Lightbourne was charged with conspiracy to commit extortion and attempted extortion and remains in custody.

Marvin Dames, senior assistant commissioner of the Bahamian police, told People magazine the document in question was irrelevant to Jett's death.

"The document did not apply in the Travolta case," he explained. "It did not apply because he was very ill, and so, the only alternative would be to take him to the hospital.

"Refusal to transport documents are for cases involving minor injuries. If your injuries are minor and you don't want to be transported, the ambulance driver would produce that form. It waives responsibility on the part of the hospital."

Jett, the eldest child of Travolta and wife Kelly Preston, had a history of seizures, which his mother had attributed to a rare blood disorder known as Kawasaki disease.

And according to Dames, the Travolta family did everything in their power to try and save their son.

"We were satisfied from all our investigations that the Travolta family and those who rendered aid to Jett did all that was humanly possible to revive Jett," he added. "All did what they were able to resuscitate him."

"There's no evidence to support that there was any effort to avoid medical treatment. Lightbourne said that himself in several interviews."

The alleged extortion emerged when Lightbourne's attorney, former Bahamian politician Pleasant Bridgewater, called Travolta's legal representatives saying her client wished to sell the 'refusal to transport' document.

The Pulp Fiction star then complained to the Royal Bahamian police through his attorney.
