The Queen was named greatest living Briton at the Greatest Britons awards held in London last night.

David Beckham was also given a special award recognising his success during a career in the spotlight.

Other winners included Helen Mirren, who portrayed her majesty in the award winning The Queen, Ricky Gervais and Amy Winehouse.

The ceremony, broadcast on ITV, gave awards for a host of categories including film, music, TV, art, business, fashion, sport and campaigning.

Controversial artist Banksy was recognised for his thought-provoking creations in the art category and the creators of Innocent Smoothies, Adam Balon and Jon Wright, were awarded in the business category.

In sport, Sir Ranulph Fiennes was recognised for climbing the Eiger face and raising £1 million for charity.

Campaigner Duncan Goose was also rewarded for his work in providing clean water for African villages.

The ceremony, which was shown on ITV1, was hosted by Kate Thornton and boasted a glitzy turnout of celebrities, including award winners Beckham and Dame Helen.

Among the panellists who decided on the winners were Lord Sebastian Coe, Marks and Spencer chief Stuart Rose, Ecologist editor Zac Goldsmith and recent Bafta winner Richard Curtis.
