Singer Chris Brown has been bailed in Los Angeles after being questioned over an alleged assault.

The Forever star turned himself into police at 19:00 local time on Sunday (03:00 GMT on Monday) and was later released on $50,000 (£34,000) bail, it has been confirmed.

Brown, 19, was due to perform at Sunday evening's Grammy Awards but both he and singer girlfriend Rihanna pulled out of the ceremony while Brown was questioned.

It is alleged he argued with an unidentified woman while sat in a parked car on Los Angeles on Saturday night.

"After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated," a Los Angeles Police Department statement said.

"The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker."

However, Brown was not booked on suspicious of causing physical harm, but for making criminal threats.

"There may be domestic violence charges added later, but that will be up to the district attorney's office," Los Angeles police Sergeant Pickett was quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying.

Brown and Rihanna had both attended a pre-Grammy awards party on Saturday evening hosted by record executive Clive Davis.

When asked for a statement regarding Brown's brush with the law, Rihanna's representative said the Umbrella star was "well" and thanked reporters for their concern.

Brown is due on court on March 5th.
