Ty Burr in the Boston Globe asked why Rango outgunned all of its rivals at the box office over the weekend, hauling in an estimated $38 million. But Paramount's animated feature pulled in far less than what box office forecasters had predicted, and it didn't even begin to approach the $116.1 in ticket sales that Disney's Alice in Wonderland earned over the comparable weekend a year ago (also with Johnny Depp featured in the voice cast), not to mention the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies that starred Depp and, like Rango . were directed by Gore Verbinski. Forecasters had predicted that Universal's sci-fi romantic thriller The Adjustment Bureau , starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, was destined to earn around $20 million, and that's what it did -- $20.9 million, according to the studio's estimates. Two other films released over the weekend weren't expected to do much business, and they didn't -- although CBS Films' Beastly opened in third place with $10.1 million, a bit more than was expected. A fourth new film, Relativity Media's comedy Take Me Home Tonight , failed even to crack the top ten, earning just $3.5 million. Last weekend's winners, Warners' Hall Pass and Disney's Gnomeo and Juliet , slipped to fourth and fifth places respectively.

The top ten films at the box office over the weekend according to estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo 1. Rango, $38 million; 2. The Adjustment Bureau, $20.9 million; 3. Beastly, $10.1 million 4. Hall Pass, $9 million; 5. Gnomeo and Juliet, $6.9 million; 6. Unknown, $6.6 million; 7. The King's Speech, $6.5 million; 8. (Tie) Just Go With It, $6.5 million; 9. I Am Number Four, $5.7 million; 10. Justin Bieber Never Say Never, $4.3 million.
