Renowned Conductor Mackerras Dies
Renowned Australian conductor SIR CHARLES MACKERRAS has died at the age of 84.
The music master, who joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra during World War II, passed away on Wednesday (14Jul10) in London after losing a lengthy battle with cancer.
MACkerras had been scheduled to conduct at the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland this summer (10).
During his career, MACkerras supervised the music on the opening night of the Sydney Opera House in 1973, and conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the English National Opera.
