Report Clears Gibson Officers
LATEST: A watchdog has ruled actor Mel Gibson's drink-driving arrest on Friday (28JUL06) was handled professionally and without bias. Officers were initially accused of a cover-up to protect the Hollywood star, who has previously participated in fundraising appeals for a police charity. It was alleged local sheriff's deputies tried to conceal Gibson's reported anti-Semitic verbal attack on officer JAMES MEE, who arrested him in Malibu, California. However, the Office of Independent Review has declared the incident was handled correctly in a preliminary investigation. The office's Chief Attorney MIKE GENNACO admitted the initial report was "modified" by someone at the Los Angeles department's Lost Hills station - but said that did not necessarily indicate wrongdoing. He also revealed the department would try to find out who leaked the initial police report to the media. A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney reveals a date for filing formal charges against Gibson has yet to be decided.
