upert Murdoch wants to buy the Los Angeles Times but is being thwarted by the current upheaval at the FCC that has seen two commissioners step down during the past week, the Wall Street Journal, which is owned by Murdoch's News Corp, indicated today (Tuesday). The newspaper said that Murdoch has been beefing up his company's lobbying efforts to prod the FCC to revise its rule that currently prevents him from owning newspapers in markets where he already owns TV stations. They're working on getting a waiver now, a source told the newspaper. Success in doing so might also hinge on Murdoch's plan to spin off his newspapers into a separate company. His TV stations, along with his movie company, would then become a separate organization called the Fox Group. If their TV stations are going to be spun off from the larger conglomerate, then they might be given a waiver on the instance that they won't directly own newspapers and stations in those particular markets anymore, Justin Nielson, an analyst at SNL Kagan, told the Journal.
