Writer-director Rian Johnson revealed he was amazed when the likes of Rachel Weisz and Adrien Brody signed up for his second feature The Brothers Bloom.

The film received its European premiere at the Times BFI 52nd London Film Festival on Monday night and Johnson, the award-winning helmer of Brick, admitted he was astounded when the Oscar-winning pair, as well as acclaimed indie actor Mark Ruffalo joined the cast.

"The casting is always a tricky process but with these guys in particular they were all really excited to do it, which kind of shocked me," he told inthenews.co.uk.

"With it being my second feature and having these names to work with was kind of a dream come true for me, but they were all just so interested in getting on board, which felt good."

The Brothers Bloom is released on December 19th and tells of the best conmen in the world (Ruffalo and Brody) who select beautiful and eccentric heiress Penelope Stamp (Weisz) as the target of their last job.

"I just love conmen movies," Johnson said of the inspiration of his innovative second feature.

"That was the initial thing but then the idea of doing a Love Story inside a movie, putting it inside a genre where the audience doesn't trust anybody and is trained to not trust anybody… whether you could pull that off was an interesting question for me."

But with the younger Bloom (Brody) swiftly developing feelings for Penelope, Stephen (Ruffalo) goes to extraordinary lengths to pull off the 'perfect con'.

Johnson, however, said he loves Ruffalo's character, despite his flaws.

"He's the classic romanticised conman, so you have to buy into that mythology, but at the end of the day, he loves his brother, and everything he does is for him," he explained at the Odeon West End in Leicester Square.

Johnson was joined at the premiere by leading lady Weisz and supporting actor Robbie Coltrane.
