Richie: 'Jackson Kids Have A Chance To Be Normal'

Michael Jackson's close friend Lionel Richie is convinced the superstar's kids "have a better chance" of living a "normal life" after their father's tragic death.
The Thriller hitmaker's three kids - Prince, 13, Paris, 12, and eight-year-old Blanket - were placed in the custody of their grandmother Katherine after the King of Pop passed away last year (09).
All three were tutored at home under the instruction of the singer, who was determined to keep his children out of the public eye, but Katherine decided they would be better off at public school.
Prince and Paris spent their first day at school in California on Wednesday (25Aug10), and Richie is convinced the youngsters will thrive in their new environment.
He tells Britain's The Sun, "I will be there for his children... I think they have a better chance now. I think they have a better opportunity to live a normal life. You know it's hard to be Michael Jackson's kids because you're out and it's you with Michael Jackson and he was larger than life."

I don't think Lionel Ritche was trying to dis Michael. It sounds to me that he is just concern & wants the kids to live as mormal of a life as possible.

Love Lionel, Love Katherine, Love the kids--------- but putting them in public school is a disaterous idea!!!!! I'd keep teaching them the way their daddy did, thats what he wanted and yes they dont have many friends but i feel this is a bad idea. Michael wanted it that way and they should obey him. They are HIS kids. HIS choice.

I know Lionel means well, but the 'tone' of his comment (which I'm sure has been edited), isn't very complimentary . . . Yes, Michael was larger than life, but to suggest w/their father no longer in their lives, the kids are better off . . . ? I know that's not what he said, but that's the, uhhh - gist of it, or rather, what I got out of it . . . maybe it's just me.Normal. They've always been normal. The media would have you believe otherwise (thus, this article-again, which I'm sure has been biasly edited).Being schooled @ home isn't abnormal - it's called "Home-schooling."Are they being picked up & dropped off? By whom? Are the bodyguards still around? Are they still traveling in big black vehicles w/extra darkly-tinted windows? Why not private school? Families who aren't as financially blessed as the Jacksons enroll their kids in private school for various reasons - safety & structure, being a couple of them (aside from educational opportunities).Yep, you're right, it's not my call (or my business, for that matter).OK, I guess I'll shut up, now ;-)

I would like to have read Lionel's complete conversation as I'm sure this was edited, but for ANYONE to even suggest that Michael's children now have an opportunity to live a normal life is an insult to Michael. Michael's children always lived a normal life. Life to them with their Daddy was THIER normal life, the life they live now without their Daddy is not. I also believe that Michael's wishes should be honored by continuing to home school the children until the children themselves request otherwise because I'm sure Michael would trust their judgment. God Bless you and your children always Michael!

Those kids will NEVER have a normal life. Whether Michael is alive or dead, he is still the person who raised them & therefore they live in his shadow by association. Lisa Marie Presley was once marri(ed) to Michael & then went on to marry a man named Michael Lockwood. Notice she "was" (past-tense) married to MJ yet people STILL refer to her as "Michael Jackson's ex-wife". It's rather disrespectful to her current husband but the media STILL does it. Those kids will be followed, mocked, and harassed forever now that their father is gone. Those kids are in the media every five minutes now. Was it like that when Michael was alive???? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"Normal" is relative. Did Michael have a "normal" life?? NO. It was impossible & he wasn't like everyone else so why should he have tried to be "normal". His talent & success wasn't normal, his genius wasn't normal, therefore he wasn't normal and DID NOT have to be!!!!!The media needs to LEAVE THOSE KIDS ALONE!!! Let them have the privacy and peace their father did NOT have. Let them be who "they" want to be, NOT what the media says they should be. End of story. Lionel should be more mindful when speaking to the press about Michael, they usually twist people's words & make them sound negative. I'm sure that wasn't his intention.

The idea of having MJ's kids attend a public school to make them "normal" is ludicrous. They are NOT normal because they are MJ's kids. They should attend the school that is BEST FOR THEIR SAFETY, EDUCATION, AND WELL BEING. If that happens to be home schooling than so be it!! Many every day parents are taking their children OUT of the public school system because it's not the best thing for their children for many reason. I respect Katherine Jackson but I hope they are not being NAIVE in thinking putting the kids in a "normal" school will result in normalcy for them. Normalcy has NOTHING to do with where you are schooled. Michael is PROOF that they were raised very well. Observe them in MJ's death? Where do you think they got that from? MICHAEL!! Those kids were raised by MICHAEL and the proof he did a helluva job comes from who they are NOW.

The article is in error since Paris and Prince are going to a private school. And, I mean no disrespect to Lionel but it's pretty scary if this "normal" thing is like the stuff that goes on with some of the school's alumna like Nicole Ritchie and Paris Hilton. YIKES!

I hope this conversation was taken out of context, because to me, this sounds like a harsh, rude comment to make considering that Richie was a close friend of Michael's. To say their lives weren't normal doesn't seem fair. How normal could life ever be for the kids of a man as famous as MJ? Besides, their lives with their loving father was all they knew, so to them, that WAS normal. Many people that knew MJ commented on what an excellent father he was. To me, Richie's comments could have even been a little "sour grapes", because we all know the troubles he went through with Nichole. She seems to be doing okay now, but things were a bit shaky for a while. I believe Michael was smart to leave his kids in his mother's care. He knew her well and Katherine knows what MJ wanted for his children. She will always consider what MJ wanted for his children and base her decisions carefully from that. She is trying to put friends in their lives and help them through the tragic loss of their father, while giving them the best education possible.
