Funnyman Ricky Gervais agreed to host the 2012 Golden Globes to "shut people up" after he was criticised for his jokes at this year's (11) ceremony.
The British comedian was accused of going too far with his stage banter after poking fun at Hollywood stars including Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie at the 2011 prizegiving.
Gervais has since been asked to host his third Globes in January (12) and admits he accepted the job so he could silence critics who predicted the controversy would finish his career.
Discussing his upcoming hosting stint, he tells U.K. talk show This Morning, "That just goes to show, doesn't it, from being banned from America to now they want you back. That's one of the reasons I said yes, really, to shut people up. They overreact. My career has been over, according to the press, once a week for the last 10 years."
When asked if he has ever regretted any of his jokes, Gervais adds, "No. I'm a 50-year-old man. Do you know what I mean? I know what I'm saying and you say it for a reason...
"I've always had that through my career, particularly in stand-up, where people mistake the subject of a joke for the target of a joke just because it's a taboo. No bad can come of discussing taboo subjects but it's usually about attitudes."
