Rio de Janeiro's Live Earth concert is now back on after security concerns raised by local authorities have been eased by the concert organisers.

Earlier this week the gig was cancelled after local police wanted to review security capabilities.

But after meeting with the authorities and addressing the concerns raised, the Copacabana Beach event will now go ahead as planned.

A statement from Mondo Entertainment, which is promoting the Rio concert, said that the Brazilian military police felt they could now "guarantee the security of the show".

Reacting to the news, Live Earth communications director Kristina Schake said: "We are thrilled that Brazil will be a part of this monumental global event and that Latin America will help drive Live Earth's message about working together to combat the climate crisis.

"Rio is the only concert that is free and open to the public, and one of Live Earth's enduring images will be of the hundreds of thousands of people on Copacabana Beach being a part of Live Earth's global movement."

Live Earth will take place in Tokyo, Shanghai, Johannesburg, London, Hamburg, Rio de Janeiro and New York tomorrow.

There had been a concert planned in Istanbul, but this was shelved after a low level of interest.

London's Live Earth, taking place at Wembley Stadium, will include performances from Madonna, Kasabian, Genesis, Paolo Nutini, Metallica and Duran Duran.
