Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold suffered for his art during the recording of the band's new album - the work "took over" his life, affected his health, and destroyed his relationship with his girlfriend.
The folk band is set to release its second album, Helplessness Blues, in May (11), almost three years after its eponymous debut hit shelves.
The record took more than a year to record, and Pecknold has revealed he became so engrossed in the process that his entire world fell apart.
He tells Uncut magazine, "This record was just so hard to do and it wasn't always that much fun for me. It cost me my relationship. It cost me my health. It ended up taking over my life in a lot of ways, and because of that it ended up being about selfishness and creativity and how when you're so committed to something it can take over so many aspects of your life...
"It just consumed me and a lot of things around me. And when something like that happens, it can leave you with a lot of very hard decisions to make. And some of them are going to have incredibly painful consequences and people are going to be hurt...
"(Choosing between work and my relationship) was a totally horrible choice. Who'd want to make a choice like that? There was a lot of guilt... It's pretty selfish, I guess, to be so relentlessly involved in what you do to the exclusion of the people around you. I need to curb that a little bit... As I say, it's not healthy. It can't be good for you in the end."
