Robin Roberts, one of the presenters of the ABC network's popular 'Good Morning America' program has been diagnosed with the blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome, Reuters reports today (June 11, 2012). Roberts battled breast cancer five years ago and it is thought that the condition was triggered by her cancer treatment. She learned the news of her condition on the same day that 'Good Morning America' beat NBC's 'Today' show in the viewer ratings.
51 year old Roberts will most likely undergo a bone marrow transplant this fall. Her sister has reportedly agreed to act as a donor for her and, in a message posted on the network's website, she revealed that she is confident that she can overcome the problems facing her. "My doctors tell me I'm going to beat this - and I know it's true." Abc called upon their own medical correspondent Dr. Richard Besser, to explain the condition further, as he had been asked to consult with her about the illness. Myelodysplastic syndrome is a rare bone marrow disorder; it typically affects elderly people and those that have had treatment for cancer.
Dr Besser explained that Robin's treatment would begin on Monday (June 18, 2012), when she will start taking a drug to prepare her body for the bone marrow transplant. Although she intends to remain presenting 'Good Morning America' for the time being, it is expected that she will stay off the air for several months following the transplant.
