Roland Emmerich is in negotiations to helm 'White House Down'.

The filmmaker - who is best known for disaster movies including 'Independence Day', 'Godzilla' and 'The Day After Tomorrow' - is set to take on directorial duties on the film, which has been written by James Vanderbilt.

Sony has paid $3 million for the script, about a paramilitary takeover of the President's Washington D.C. home.

It has been compared to the 'Die Hard' series when it was purchased by the studio.

Vanderbilt's most recent work includes the not-yet-released 'The Amazing Spider-Man' with British actor Andrew Garfield and 'Easy A' star Emma Stone.

Roland will produce the project alongside Harald Kloser, Bradley Fischer, Vanderbilt and Laeta Kalogridis.

Production is set to begin after the summer, but no cast has yet been confirmed.

German-born Roland is currently shooting an untitled TV movie, and has been linked to an 'Independence Day' follow-up starring Will Smith, but that has not yet been confirmed.
