Rooney Mara is winning all the plaudits for her dark portrayal of troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', but the actress has played down the movie's chances at the 2012 Academy Awards.
The 26-year-old has already been nominated for a Golden Globe - a key barometer for the Oscars - though refuses to believe the movie will be in the reckoning come the biggest night of the awards season in February. Speaking to the Chicago-Sun Times, the actress said, "I don't know if this is necessarily an Oscar movie. It's just not on my radar". The film is based on Stieg Larsson's bestselling novel and Lisbeth was originally portrayed by actress Noomi Rapace in the original Swedish thriller. Despite undergoing a dramatic physical transformation to match Rapace's effort, Rooney Mara is still unsure whether she captured the essence of the hacker, saying, "I don't think there was a single moment where I finally said, 'I am this girl.' You're never quite sure if you're doing it right. The second we finished shooting, I wished we could start all over again. I never think I got it right". Despite Mara's modesty, the movie has impressed critics ahead of its release this weekend. The Guardian's film critic Xan Brooks noted, "In less experienced hands, this would surely have wound up as lurid, trashy pulp. Yet Fincher plays it straight and keeps it serious", while Variety's Justin Chang called the film a "fastidiously grim pulp entertainment that plays like a first-class train ride through progressively bleaker circles of hell".
Next up for Mara is Kathryn Bigelow's forthcoming untitled thriller about the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the battle that resulted in his death. The film also stars 'Luther' actor Idris Elba and The Dark Knight Rises star TOM HARDY.
