Actor Rupert Everett has defended his controversial comments about gay parents, insisting he is not "against" same-sex partners having children.

The openly homosexual star was criticised earlier this week (beg17Sep12) after stating kids "need a father and a mother", adding, "(I) can't think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads."

The comments attracted the wrath of gay rights advocates in Everett's native U.K., but the actor has now spoken out to address the furore and stand by his remarks.

He tells British talk show This Morning, "The good news on this is I'm not applying for any sort of public office. I don't want to be a Mp (Member of Parliament), I don't want to be in a council, I don't want to be the head of (actors' union) Equity. I'm just an individual with my own life and the things I want to do myself.

"I'm not against anybody doing anything... I'm not one of those people who wants to say, 'Oh no, you can't do that, you have got to pull the clocks back'. Just I, personally, feel like that... I have loads of friends, gay friends, with children... I am not big into marriage, straight or gay, to be honest. I am very out of kilter with the rest of the world, I realise."
