Scottish singer Sandi Thom has recorded a cover version of John Hiatt's emotionally-charged track When New York Had Her Heart Broke as a tribute to those who died in the tragedy of 9/11.
Almost 3,000 people were killed in the worst terrorist attack in America's history after two hijacked airplanes crashed into the Twin Towers at New York's World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. A third slammed into the Pentagon in Virginia and a fourth crash landed in Pennsylvania.
Stars flocked to their Twitter.com blogs on Tuesday (11Sep12) to mark the 11th anniversary of the tragedy and Thom added her own observance of the 2001 attack by sharing her re-recording of the Hiatt song with followers via video-sharing website YouTube.com.
The promo for the tribute track features written memories from fans about the sad day and Thom added her own message which read: "This 9/11 I will remember... that despite the despair, despite the loss, despite the death and destruction that the world demonstrated that day that it could unite in the face of terror, that it still, despite our differences, stood shoulder to shoulder as brothers and sisters...
"God bless Nyc, the tremendous city that captivates the hearts and minds of everyone that walks its streets. God bless the families of those that were lost that day. But make this day a celebration, that in the face of adversity mankind can and will stand and unite and that the goodness in this world can never be defeated or overturned by evil. We will always fight it and we will always win. Big love, Sandi."
Hiatt penned the tune days after witnessing the horror of 9/11 for himself while promoting his album in the Big Apple, and Thom admits reliving the tragic events of that day through song proved to be too much for her.
In a post on Twitter, she writes, "It was so hard for me to record this 9/11 tribute without bursting in to tears, believe me they were shed afterwards".
Thom isn't the only singer/songwriter to release a moving tribute to those who perished on 9/11 - Wisconsin-based Alicia Lemke, who is currently on tour with Florence + The MAChine, has offered up a hymn titled Maiden Lane.
She calls the tune, inspired by the book My 9-11 Project: One Man's Journey Through the Unexpected Events of September 11th, 2001, "a lullaby to all those who had to sleep through that terrible night," adding, "I wrote Maiden Lane after reading a passage from the story where the author walks civilians down Maiden Lane (a street in the Financial District) in order to put them to bed by candle light in his own apartment. As they walked down Maiden Lane, he was struck by the silence and heaviness in the air. My song looks to alleviate the heaviness of that day and bring hope to our future."
