Scorsese Scores His Best Opening Weekend With The Departed

Martin Scorsese's star-studded THE DEPARTED is the number one movie at the US box office, giving the legendary director his highest opening weekend ever. The gangster film, which stars Jack Nicholson, Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone and Mark Wahlberg, debuted at the top having sold $27 million (GBP15 million) worth of tickets in its opening three days. Prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: THE BEGINNING is another new entry at number two, having made $19.2 million (GBP10.7 million). Animated movie OPEN SEASON falls two places to number three with $16 million (GBP8.9 million), while Jessica Simpson comedy EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH is a new entry at number four with $11.8 million (GBP6.6 million). Kevin Costner movie The Guardian rounds out the top five with $9.6 million (GBP5.3 million).
