Acclaimed singer-songwriter John Martyn has died at the age of 60, it has been confirmed.

The Solid Air musician, who was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List, was born in Surrey but spent most of his childhood in Glasgow.

Having found fame during the burgeoning London folk scene in the 60s, he later experimented with jazz, blues and funk.

A statement on his website on Thursday said: "With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning."

Martyn struggled with drink and drugs throughout his life and had to have his right leg amputated below the knee in 2003, after a cyst burst.

"I could see it coming," he told the Herald newspaper after the amputation. "I had myself resigned to it well before it happened.

"But it could have happened when I was 15 and changed my life entirely.

"Even if I popped my clogs tomorrow, I've had a wonderful time. I can't argue at all about the way that life's dealt me."

Martyn collaborated with the likes of Phil Collins, John Paul Jones and Eric Clapton and he was the first act signed to Island Records.
