A sequel for Oscar-winning film The Queen is in development, reports claim.

Director Peter Morgan is to direct the final part of his 'Blair trilogy', which began with Channel 4 film The Deal in 2003, this time focusing on the former prime minister's relationship with the US.

According to Variety, the new movie will focus on the crucial handover of power between Tony Blair's natural centre-left ally Bill Clinton and right-wing incumbent George Bush.

Producer Andy Harries told the trade newspaper that Morgan - who's recently adapted BBC drama State of Play for US screens as well rewriting John Le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy for the screen - was fascinated by this period in British history.

"Peter sees this as a pivotal moment when the special relationship between Britain and America changed," he said.

Harries added: "Peter always hoped to do a trilogy to mark the Blair years that we've all lived through, but it's been difficult to find the right point at which to look at Blair in power."

It is thought that Michael Sheen will reprise his role as Blair, although an appearance from Oscar-winner Dame Helen Mirren is less certain.

Morgan was nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay for The Queen and won a Bafta for his adaptation of Giles Foden's book The Last King of Scotland.
