The Sex And The City movie has topped the UK box office charts but has failed to match the opening take of the fourth Indiana Jones film.

Sarah Jessica Parker and her co-stars in the HBO series - Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall - reunited some four years after the cultural landmark show ended and their return proved a success with UK cinemagoers, with £8.77 million taken in its opening weekend.

However, the cinema debut of Carrie Bradshaw and co was not as tempting to British audiences as the return of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, with the adventurous archaeologist pulling in £12.2 million in its first three days on show.

The performance of the two films in the UK matched their success across the Atlantic, with the spin-off from the HBO series claiming the top spot in the US with $55.7 million (£28.3 million) but only narrowly beating Indiana Jones, which took $46 million ($23 million).

Sex and the City and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull proved the big-hitters at this weekend's cinemas, with third-placed movie What Happens In Vegas… falling one place with just £641,033 at the box office.

Iron Man fell one to fourth while children's adventure Nim's Island remained in fifth place.

In at six was comedy sequel Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, while Martin Lawrence's Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins was the other new entry in this week's top ten, debuting at nine.

The top ten films at the UK box office are: (last week's position)

1 Sex and the City - £8.7m (-)
2 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - £5.5m (1)
3 What Happens In Vegas… - £641,033 (2)
4 Iron Man - £629,232 (3)
5 Nim's Island - £280,160 (5)
6 Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - £265,346 (-)
7 Forgetting Sarah Marshall - £118,049 (4)
8 Speed Racer - £109,267 (6)
9 Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins - £40,380 (-)
10 Caramel - £38,130 (9)
