A new series of comedy gameshow Shooting Stars will be shown on the BBC this autumn, it has been announced.

Show host Vic Reeves, 50, told the Daily Express the surreal programme was set for a comeback, following its successful Christmas special.

And Reeves' co-star, Little Britain co-creator Matt Lucas, confirmed the news on his personal blog on the Twitter social networking site.

"Vic has mentioned it so now I can... Shooting Stars will be back for a new series later this year, with Ulrika and Jack Dee as captains!" Lucas wrote on Friday.

Lucas, 35, appears on the show in the guise of scorekeeper George Dawes, and later told 'followers' of his Twitter updates: "In response to your questions, yes George will be back behind the drums and a-singing his weekly song."

Shooting Stars, which originally featured Jonsson and Mark Lamarr as team captains, ran between 1993 and 2002 and featured bizarre rounds including the Dove from Above, in which a plastic bird would descend from the studio ceiling bearing questions.

A Christmas special saw Reeves and comedy partner Bob Mortimer reunited last December and now a brand new series will return to UK screens.

Reeves told the Daily Express the show would be "the best ever" and confirmed the Dove from Above round would be reinstated.
