Showtime Developing "People"-Oriented Sports Shows

The CBS-owned pay-TV channel Showtime is planning an aggressive move into sports programming with documentaries, features, and talk shows that will emphasize provocative, distinctive storytelling, Stephen Espinoza, head of Showtime Sports, told today's (Wednesday) Los Angeles Times. Other channels focus on events, but not enough on people. What I believe you'll see on Showtime is authentic storytelling and genuine emotion. Among the new programs that the channel will offer will be 60 Minutes Sports, which will be produced by the CBS 60 Minutes team and air once a month on Wednesdays (with a repeat after two weeks). It will alternate with the second season of Jim Rome on Showtime. In addition, the channel has signed an exclusive deal with Floyd Mayweather Jr., which calls for all of the heavyweight champ's pay-per-view fights to be carried by Showtime for the remainder of his career.
