Skyfall Shakes Up Video Sales

It appears that Skyfall, which became the highest-grossing James Bond thriller at the box office in history, may repeat that accomplishment with DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales. Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, which tracks video sales, said on Wednesday that Skyfall debuted as the No. 1 seller on both the DVD and the separate Blu-ray Disc chart. Although actual sales figures for DVD and Blu-ray Discs are not disclosed, Home Media magazine reported that Skyfall won big, noting that it sold more than five times as many copies as its closest competitor, Sony Pictures' Hotel Transylvania, which remained at No. 2 for the second consecutive week. Since Sony, which released Skyfall, does not make copies of its films available to the biggest online rental outfits like Netflix and kiosk operators like Redbox until 28 days after it is released for sale, Paramount's Flight took the No. 1 spot on the rental charts for the second week in a row.
