Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer Was A Last-minute Addition To Peter Gabriel's So Album

Peter Gabriel's smash-hit Sledgehammer single almost didn't make it on his groundbreaking 1986 album So - because the singer/songwriter didn't bring his new music project to the studio until his band and session musicians were packing up after spending almost a year working with him.

The track went on to become Gabriel's biggest hit, but longtime bassist Tony Levin admits it almost didn't make the cut - and it could have become a lost track for years to come.

In an interview filmed for new Dvd documentary Classic Albums: So, Levin explains, "We were packing up and, in typical fashion, he (Gabriel) said, 'I have this idea for the next album... Would you mind just doing a run through of it?' In his mind he's only a couple of months away from doing his next album.

"So we just reassembled the stuff and did a quick version or two of Sledgehammer and then we just packed up and went home, thinking, 'No one will ever hear that track'."

But Gabriel and producer pal Daniel Lanois liked what they heard and added Sledgehammer to the finished album.
