Sophia Loren, the Academy Award-winning Italian actress, was honoured in a ceremony in Hollywood on Wednesday (4th May 2011). Stars of stage and screen paid tribute to Sophia Loren, 50 years since she become the first person to win an Oscar for a foreign-language role, reports the Associated Press.
Yesterday's tribute ceremony featured clips from Loren's biggest films from her 1950's to 1970's heyday, including, 'Marriage Italian Style', 'A Special Day', 'El Cid' and 'Man of La Mancha'. The 76-year-old's glittering movie career saw her star alongside Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Cary Grant, Marlon Brando and Frank Sintra, but yesterday's tributes came from a younger crop of Hollywood stars. John Travolta described Loren as "the most delicious thing to come out Italy", while Billy Crystal revealed that the actress was his "first great love". Loren, who won her Oscar for the 1960 Italian movie 'Two Women', said winning the award helped her progress as an actress, saying, "The Academy Award changed my life completely. It helped me to believe in myself and encouraged me to push my own artistic boundaries".
Sophia Loren's most recent major screen role came in 2009 when she starred alongside Daniel Day Lewis in 'Nine'. The film's director Rob Marshall described working with the actress as "the most magic I will ever have".
