STAR WARS DAY, the unofficial title given to 4th May, is being celebrated by fans of the sci-fi movies across the world. The date has fast become recognised as 'International Star Wars Day', with fans jokingly twisting the famous quote "May the force be with you" into "May the 4th be with you".

Purist fans of George Lucas' much-loved franchise still insist that 'Star Wars Day' should be officially recognised as the 25th May, to mark the anniversary of the original movie's premiere in 1977. Although it is not known who first changed the famous phrase, it is assumed that a gaffe by German news channel N24 could have contributed to the phenomena. During an interview with Mr Lucas, the network's translator misunderstood the famous quote and mistakenly rendered it "May the 4th be with you" for the on-screen subtitles. A number of comedy panel shows picked up on the mistake and sci-fi fans began referring to the date as their unofficial day of celebration.

STAR WARS DAY is being celebrated in schools, universities and workplaces, with prizes being offered for the best costume. LucasFilm recently signalled their intention to re-release all six movies in 3-D, with 'The Phantom Menace' set to hit cinemas on 10th February 2012.
