A galaxy far, far away will come to London next year as a major Star Wars show is launched.

Star Wars: A Musical Journey will see the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing selections from John Williams' iconic score as scenes from the legendary films are shown on a cinema screen.

And London's O2 Arena will play host to the world premiere of the show in April 2009, before it embarks on a European tour.

Oscar-winning composer Williams has restructured his historic theme for the musical, which will not feature live actors but is likely to feature actors from the films as live narrators.

"This is going to be something special for fans of Star Wars and anyone who appreciates John Williams' amazing work," said producer Spencer Churchill.

"I would even say it's a great family night out and date night. There's no pyrotechnics or flashy lights - it's all about the films, the music and the wonderful characters.

He told the Evening Standard newspaper: "Everyone has a piece of these films and characters they have a relationship with and there will be something for all. I remember queuing in line to see the first Star Wars movie in 1977, and Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia amazed me. Now kids like the characters from the recent films - it has an enduring appeal."

Mr Churchill said the Another Planet entertainment company were "very lucky" to have been selected by George Lucas' Lucasfilm company to produce the show.

Star Wars: A Musical Journey will open at the O2 on April 10th. Tickets, costing between £30 and £100, will go on sale on Monday.
