Steven Spielberg Set For Triumphant Oscar Return With Lincoln?
Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Lincoln is being tipped for an Oscar before it’s full trailer has been released, such is its director’s holy name. But will the E.T creator’s latest epic, which depicts the tale of the US leader who won the civil war and outlawed slavery make a Spielberg sized splash when the winners are announced?
With much expected from the cinematic giant, Spielberg has tended to disappoint. Last years effort, War Horse was a huge flop; there’s no other way to describe it. The World War I epic managed no wins from six nominations, which is an embarrassing haul for a director of his quality and pedigree. His new box office entry, based on historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, will hope to perform a lot better. It reportedly focuses on Lincoln's battle to abolish slavery in January 1865 to his death in April the same year at the hands of assassin John Wilkes Booth. The 44-second teaser-trailer depicts Lincoln standing before a young child, and announces a live ‘Google Hangout’ with Speilberg and one of the film’s stars, Joseph Gordon-Levitt after the full trailer, which will be released on September 13th.. The film’s full U.S release is November 25th.
Lincoln will face stiff competition for the most prestigious awards, with The Master, by Paul Thomas Anderson being tipped by many to sweep up at The Oscars. The cult-drama, which features the acting prowess of Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix received rave reviews from its festival outings and critical reviews respectively.
