Stevie Wonder has called for "stronger and stricter" gun laws in America following the massacre at a Connecticut school on Friday (14Dec12).

A gunman, named as Adam Lanza, 20, opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, killing 20 kindergarten students and six staff members before allegedly turning the weapon on himself.

The news sparked fresh debate about gun control in the U.S., with stars including Cher, Cyndi Lauper and Zach Braff taking to their accounts to urge officials to introduce new laws - and Wonder has echoed their sentiments.

While headlining his 17th Annual House Full Of Toys Benefit Concert in Los Angeles on Saturday (15Dec12), the Superstition hitmaker asked the crowd for a moment of silence to honour the victims.

Speaking to after the performance at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, he said, "I think we're at a very interesting time now where we can use again tragedy such as this, which is a major tragedy, as a way to (sic) moving forward to something that we need to confront. I think people can't think like they're living in the wild, wild west going into 2013.

"With guns and their accessibilities (sic), there have to be stronger and stricter gun laws. It's Ok saying no, it's Ok particularly when you know some people are not as mentally stable. So you don't want them to have a gun or any other kind of weapon at their disposal.

"Here we are in this time where we're all in pain because of the loss... it's ridiculous. No matter how you look at it, it's ridiculous and if you don't see that there's a need to think differently, to see things a little differently than you did in the past, then you're not in touch with today, you're still lost in yesterday."

Wonder's appearance at the benefit had been thrown into doubt earlier when he fell ill with a sore throat, but he received a shot of antibiotics during the day and went onstage as planned.

However, Bruno Mars was not so lucky - the singer was unable to perform due to his own throat problems.
