Soul icon Stevie Wonder and High School Musical actress Monique Coleman travelled to the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday (15Sep11) to help officials launch a free news application for mobile phones.
The Superstition star, a U.N. Messenger of Peace, and Coleman, a U.N. Youth Champion, joined organisation officials to unveil the software, which provides readers with up-to-date news articles from various U.N. agencies and programmes and encourages them to get involved.
Coleman says, "As U.N. Youth Champion, I travelled the world for six months visiting over 20 countries. I saw firsthand the role that technology can play particularly in education.
"I encourage everyone to download this app. It can bridge the gap between young people and the United Nations and equip today's 'philanthroteen' with the tools he or she needs to have global social impact."
Wonder's cell phone was fitted with a voice-reader application to help relay the updates to the blind singer.
The stars later took part in a ceremony with actor Michael Douglas to commemorate the 30th anniversary of The International Day of Peace, which is marked next Wednesday (21Sep11).
