Researchers in California have revealed that Hollywood is still very much male-dominated following a lengthy battle of the celebrity sexes study.
The University of Southern California findings suggest women are grossly under-represented in movies, with 70 per cent of the major speaking roles in the top-earning 100 films of 2009 belonging to men.
Students of communication and journalism examined the top films and their 4,342 speaking roles and discovered that only 32.8 per cent were female - a percentage identical to that of the top-grossing movies of 2008.
According to the Los Angeles Times newspaper, the Usc study also determined that women were far more likely to wear provocative clothing than their male co-stars in films and only 3.6 per cent of the top directors were women.
