Sikh outrage over a joke in a Jay Leno monologue last week in which he showed a photo of the Sikh shrine, the Golden Temple of Amritsar, and referred to it as "Mitt Romney's summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee," escalated on Tuesday as an Indian-American, Dr. Randeep Dhillon, filed a lawsuit against Leno, saying that the joke "clearly exposes plaintiff, other Sikhs and their religion to hatred, contempt, ridicule and obloquy because it falsely portrays the holiest place in the Sikh religion as a vacation resort owned by a non-Sikh." Dhillon, who heads the Bol Punjabi All Regions Community Organization of Bakersfield, CA, said that Leno's "entire publication ... hurt the sentiments of all Sikh people in addition to those of the plaintiff." It also resulted in "loss to his reputation, shame, mortification and hurt feelings all to his general damage." Leno has yet to comment on the controversy over his joke, which also resulted in a formal complaint being filed with the State Department by the Foreign Ministry of India.
