Superchunk - Superchunk Bassist Bows Out Of Live Shows
Superchunk bassist Laura Ballance will no longer join the indie rockers onstage for live performances after developing a hearing condition.
The musician has reached out to fans online to explain that she will not be able to appear alongside her bandmates to promote their forthcoming album, I Hate Music, after being diagnosed with hyperacusis, which makes her oversensitive to certain loud sounds and can cause hearing loss and ringing in the ears.
In a blog post on the band's website, she writes, "It's not because I hate music. And it's not because I am too old. You know, that thing about if it's too loud you are too old? That keeps running through my head, dammit...
"I am really sad that I won't be out on the road with Jim (Wilbur), Jon (Wurster) and Mac (MCCaughan) because it's a blast. And playing for all of you people who come to our shows is a blast too. It is one of the most fun and gratifying things I have done during my life. I am going to miss you."
Ballance, one of the band's founding members, will continue to work with the group in the studio and is open to a live return if she can find treatment for her disorder.
She adds, "This is not meant to add a roulette element to the upcoming shows. Chances are I won't be there people, Ok? If I will, I will let you know in advance."
