Doctor Who star David Tennant could be readying to quit the hit show after sources claimed he will play Hamlet on stage in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The stage role will run from July to November next year, which could scupper plans to film a new series of the sci-fi show.

A show source explained to the Daily Mirror that filming on the BBC1 programme takes up nine months of the year, although there is a short break over the summer.

"He would struggle to be both the Doctor and Hamlet," the source added.

"He's just finishing filming the next series - so don't be surprised if that's his last. Doctor Who fans will be devastated if he leaves."

Tennant took over from Christopher Eccleston to become the tenth Doctor in 2005 and has proved highly popular as the time travelling Tardis owner.

If Tennant, 36, does decide to quit, it will mean a short run of just four series for the latest incarnation of the Doctor.
