Pop group The Beautiful South have announced they have officially split up.

The band, best known for hits such as Perfect 10, issued a statement on their website confirming the news.

In a statement the band confirmed they had decided to split up "due to 'musical similarities'".

"Thanks to everyone for the years of support," the band added.

The band first hit the heights with the single A Little Time in 1990 and have continued to produce songs since they were founded by the partnership of Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway.

Fellow band members Sean Welch, Dave Stead and Dave Rotheray helped deliver a distinctive melodious sound but after the release of their last album, Superbi, the band have gone their separate ways.

Heaton pursued solo projects under the pseudonym Biscuit Boy, while fellow band member Dave Rotheray formed his own band, Homespun.
