The Bourne Ultimatum has won the final accolade of the award season in being named Britons' favourite film of the year.

The action sequel took the people's choice prize at the Richard Attenborough film awards after a public vote from 25 UK regional media outlets.

The people's choice award is the seventh prize to have been bestowed as part of the inaugural Richard Attenborough awards, with Atonement taking the best film prize last month.

In a statement in response to Thursday's announcement, The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass said he was "hugely honoured that the UK public has voted for The Bourne Ultimatum as their favourite film in what was a fine year for the cinema".

Matt Damon, the movie's leading man, added: "We shot most of the sequences in London and at the UK's Pinewood studios with a primarily British crew.

"So I'm particularly excited that this award has been voted for by the Brits themselves."

It was confirmed earlier this week that Damon and Greengrass are to team up for a fourth instalment in the Bourne franchise despite both having professed a reluctance to revisit the character.

Speaking at last year's Cannes Film Festival, Damon had said he was "definitely done" with playing Bourne adding: "I think we've ridden that horse as far as we can.

"The character lives on in the books and if someone else wanted to play it, I guess they could."

But according to industry newspaper Variety, Damon and Greengrass have now been contracted by Universal Studios for a fourth film, though neither a plot nor a release date has yet been announced.
