The Coen Brothers were not concerned about remaking 'True Grit' because many young people don't know it.

The legendary film directors - made up of siblings Joel and Ethan - were not worried about their version of the John Wayne-classic not being well received because few people can remember what the story is.

Asked if there was any "trepidation" about the project, Joel said: "Not really. It's sort of interesting. It's like, for people from our generation and older, the movie does have this sort of iconic status, but if you get a little bit younger - more into the actual demographic of the book - it's surprising how many people don't know it. Even just a little bit younger than us, lots of people go, 'Oh yeah, I know the title but what is that again?' "

Ethan added to Awards Daily: "Older people might resist the idea more as they have that emotional connection to John Wayne which people in that younger demographic don't any more."

Despite neither of them being concerned, the film's star Jeff Bridges - who plays a marshal who helps a teenage girl find the man who murdered her father - has previously revealed he was nervous about taking on the iconic role.

Asked if he hesitated before accepting the role, he said: "To be honest, a little bit. I was curious as to why they'd want to remake that film, but they said, 'We don't want to remake the film, we're making the book. We're not referencing the movie.'

"I was happy. It meant I didn't have to try to emulate John Wayne, I could approach it how I wanted."
